What Does SCC Look Like?
Squamous Cell Carcinoma often presents as a firm, red lump on the skin, which may feel rough to the touch or develop a warty or scaly surface. These growths can sometimes become tender, crusted, or bleed, particularly if irritated or left untreated.
In some cases, SCC may appear as an open sore that does not heal, or it may heal and then re-open. This persistent behaviour is a key warning sign that a skin lesion could be cancerous and needs expert evaluation.
These lesions typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the body such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands, and arms. Individuals who spend a lot of time outdoors or have a history of sunburns are at a higher risk. Early recognition and treatment are essential to prevent the cancer from growing or spreading.

Treatment Options for SCC
Surgical Removal
The primary treatment for SCC, ensuring the complete removal of cancerous tissue with a margin of normal skin of 5-10 mm. Surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, and in cases where a larger area is removed, reconstructive techniques such as skin grafting may be necessary.
Mohs Surgery
A specialised procedure in which thin layers of cancerous tissue are progressively removed and examined under a microscope. This technique is particularly useful for high-risk or recurrent SCC, as it maximises tissue preservation while ensuring complete removal of cancerous cells.
Radiotherapy
Recommended for cases where surgery is not an option, radiotherapy uses targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells. It is particularly beneficial for large or difficult-to-treat SCCs and for patients who may not be suitable candidates for surgery.
Referral to a specialist oncologist is required and the process usually requires several visits to the oncology department to receive small doses of radiation.
The treatment only affects the exposed areas of skin and thus does not cause illness or generalised hair loss. Cosmetic results are generally excellent.
